On the philosophical tip with this one

Catch me after a couple margaritas, my biz filter starts dropping, and the vibes grab me — here's what I'd tell you Reader,

Stick with me on this one.

Real, authentic community is complicated.

As humans, we are hardwired to seek out and express our individuality. And yet our strength and survival as a species requires sacrificing some of that individually for the sake and needs of the group.

And when we look closer at the cycle of humanity, we find...

We will set aside some of our individuality when it benefits us, to see outsized results! And conversely —
when the demands of the group become too threatening to our individual expression, we leave (or in some cases, live deeply unsatisfied inside).

That's a complex balance to find, and it's underneath everything that is happening when humans gather in groups - of any size.

But when that balance is found, and the natural, pulsing, aliveness of community is thriving - people find belonging. The values and identity of the community, they make their own. The contributions of the group achieving more than any one individual. And there is a sweeping synergistic benefit for everyone involved.

Biologists will tell you "You can’t make natural organisms do something. You can only disrupt nature, nudge it, goad it a little."

So HOW ON EARTH, does one really build community when it's such a wiggling, evolving and natural thing?

The best communities I’ve ever been part of weren’t built on elaborate rule systems and rigid structures.

They were built on three simple things:

  1. We look after each other.
  2. We look after this space.
  3. We look after ourselves.

That’s it. That’s often enough structure and enough freedom for people to find themselves inside a community.

It’s enough to let the culture breathe and self-organize around what it actually needs.

The communities that struggle?

They’re usually one of two things:

Either they’re too rigid — so many rules and boxes and required behaviors that the humans inside them can’t be unpredictable, which is the one thing humans are going to do no matter what.

Or they’re formless — no culture scaffolding at all, and the team is trying to hold everything together via pure sheer force of will. Which is, unsurprisingly, exhausting and unsustainable.

The first step to bend the arc of your community back into thriving?

You've already got it sitting there ready.

It's the inner circle of your community.

This is true on every level. As an individual, thinking about YOUR personal and chosen community, across the spectrum of community types: from facebook groups, local impact groups, all the way to global enterprise customer communities.

When you invest in your most engaged connections — when you create rituals that make their contribution visible, when you give them proximity, recognition, and a pathway to teach — you’re not just building engagement.

You’re creating the conditions for the community to carry itself forward.

That’s the whole goal, honestly.

A community that continues to build belonging, attract its own members, develop its own leaders — without any one contributor being the sole engine of all of it.

That's the good shit right there.

Want somewhere to start with your own community?

The member feature ritual is so much more than content, retention, and engagement.

It’s the first step in building that kind of culture. Intentionally. On purpose.

"Lemme get the next round..."
